Artifact: Spelling Assessment

Competencies:

Competency 12.2- “Use computers and other technologies effectively and appropriately to collect information on student learning using a variety of methods”

Competency 12.5- "Organizational and management strategies that support active student involvement, inquiry, and collaboration"

Competency 13.1- "Use media and technology to address differences in children's learning and performance"

Alignments with INTASC Standards:
This artifact is a spelling assessment that will inform the teacher of how first grade students learn and develop spelling strategies so that the teacher can provide opportunities that support the child’s intellectual, social, and personal development needs based on their cognitive level (INTASC Standard 2).This activity provides assessment on a variety of levels for learners and offers a game to help students get further help on words or concepts that they do not yet understand. It encourages students to look back on prior knowledge of vocabulary recognition and test to see what level of spelling ability the child is on.This is a useful tool to see what students know and what they need to know.  This artifact also uses assessment strategies by checking for abilities in spelling in an array of words to encourage teachers to adjust instruction in order to make it more helpful for students.  It uses these assessment strategies to inform the teacher and child of the reader's strength in reading and spelling and what needs to be worked on (INTASC Standard 8).

Context:
This spelling assessment artifact was created during my senior block for the purpose of testing a variety of students to see what spelling level they are on.The artifact then focuses on ways to improve the spelling abilities for lower level first grade spellers. An assessment was completed on each child and a description is given to explain why each child is on a particular spelling level.A word sort was also created to help students on a lower level first grade level to allow them to gain a better understanding of words and sorts at this age level.

Impact:
In meeting competency 12.2, 12.5, and 13.1 this assessment can be word proecessed so that students are able to scroll down the screen to read words.  Reading the words as a word document or as flip cards allows the to assess students' knowledge to gain an understanding of the different speeling levels of all students in the class.  The computer provides a way for teachers to organize the words and the material so that testing is more effective and reliable.   Everyday we are assessing our students for their abilities in particular subject areas. As an elementary school teacher I will constantly be giving and creating assessments to test my students’ abilities. Therefore, this spelling assessment will be an extremely important tool in my class because I can use it to test the skills of all students and create word sorts that help to better understand more advance words.I plan to use spelling assessments quite often in my classroom so this information will become extremely important in the development of material in my classroom
