Modern
Fashion and Invention Project: This artifact is a webpage that
demonstrates how students and teachers can create their own webpage through
this creative activity. (Use the "Back" button on your browser to

Context
While in my Media and Technology class in
the Fall of 2001, I learned how to create webpages. The Modern Fashion
and Invention Project was my first webpage and was created using Netscape
Composer.
Impact
I plan to use the Modern Fashion and Invention
Project in my classroom to help students meet their technology curriculum
standards, demonstrate valuable writing skills, and design a creative product
that helps express themselves to others.
Alignment
The Modern Fashion and Invention Project is
a set of four web pages that I designed to serve as a model for my colleagues/peers
and my students. The Teacher's Page is designed in a lesson plan
format so that other educators or parents can see how the project is set
up. (Technology V D and INTASC Principle 10)
I planned the project so that students will
work in small groups or pairs for this activity. The students select
an item and "design" a creative new fashion or invention. Using a
digital camera, student have to photograph their invention or fashion and
include it in their webpage. Individually, students have to word
process an informative essay about the product. One main part of
this activity is the sharing of the responcibility of using the technology
equipment, such as the digital camera and the computer. This requirement
of sharing technology will help me to manage both the students' learning
and the technology. (Technology Standard III D)
The Student's Page has detailed instructions
in case they do not understand or need a reference as to how to complete
the activity. This page is in addition to the verbal instructions
that I would give to students since this project can be complicated.
Because of the difficult nature of this activity, I decided to have my
students work in pairs or small groups. This allows students to collaborate
with their peers to that they can assist each other with this project.
It helps to create a community of learners within the classroom, which
is essesntial for my students to create healthy social skills. (INTASC
Principle 6 and Technology Standard II E))
A main element of the project is the creativity
that students demonstrate. By giving the students a choice in the
selection of their "object," the students can mentally assess how they
could use the objects in a creative way. Once an object has been
selected, a group of students have to give it a name, describe its function
and attributes, and even make an advertisement for their fashion or invention.
Their creative writing skills will come into play here as they write an
essay that includes all of the requirements (mandated by the teacher) but
also reflects their own unique self or writing style. (Technolgy Standard
III C)
I designed the rubric (located on the Teacher's
Page) to assist me when formally evaluating the students' final products
(webpages). (Technology Standard IV A) The components of the rubric
come from various curriculum areas, such as Langage Arts and Information
Skills (Technolgy Standards III A). Also, I would like for the students
to evaluate their own performance and participation in this activity, giving
me an idea of how the students percieved their own social interation and
participation. If possible, when all of the projects are complete,
I would like for the class to share their projects and give positive feedback
to one another. (INTASC Principle 8 and Technolgy Standard IV C)
