Culture Kit:
A Culture Kit is a shoe box that can be decorated and contains things that
represent a specific culture.
Context
I participated in this activity while in my
Social Studies Methods course in the Fall of 2001 as a way to incorporate
students from other cultures as well as teach them about diversity.
Impact
I plan on using this activity to promote an
awareness and appreciation of other cultures within my classroom.
Students will also get this chance to interact with one another to develop
their social skills.
Alignment
Many students learn by actually participating
in an activity that is hands-on, such as the Culture Kit. Students
from diverse backgrounds may not know how to share their culture with others.
By providing the whole class with an opportunity to explore a variety of
cultures and customs, everyone can benefit. To research the cultures,
I would have the students use the Internet to find specific vocubulary,
facts about the country (or other location), and pictures of customs or
people. The researching experience itself could help students learn
the truth about cultures (Technology Standard VI C) . When the Culture
Kits are completed, I would have half of the class explain their Culture
Kits to the other half of the class and after a while, exchange roles so
that everyone gets an opportunity to share and learn. (INTASC Principle
