Evaluation
B. Context This assignment was created in Social Studies in the Elementary Classroom. With a partner, we chose two second grade social studies textbooks. Through various criteria, we evaluated many aspects of these two textbooks, including: Interdisciplinary Organization and Conceptual Approach, Learning Aids and Motivational Devices, Readability and Ease in Comprehending, Analytical Mode and Question Levels, Social Issues, Minorities and Bias, Skill Development and Decision Making, Relationship to the Learner, and Research and Recency. C. Impact As a teacher, we should be able to evaluate the materials that are passed by our desks. This project made me much more familiar with this type of evaluation and analysis. This made me aware of the many aspects to look for in a textbook, and how you may have to differentiate your lessons if the textbook does not meet all of your requirements and criteria. D. Alignment
This project meets the INTASC principles #7 and #9. Principle #7 states, the teacher plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals. This project provided me with information to determine how to plan my instruction and lessons around the specific textbook, catering to the curriculum. Principle #9 states, The teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (students, parents, and other professionals in the learning community) and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally. This is directly what the textbook evaluation consists of: evaluating the textbook and its effectiveness according to the student, parents, and others in the learning environment.
