A. Name.  Literature Circle

B. Context This wonderful assignment was created in my Children's Literature class.  Individually, I chose two children's books that I wanted to create a literature circle unit around.  I chose "Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key" and "The Skin I'm In".  Surrounding these two books, I prepared the teacher plans for each section, as well as examples of the roles such as:  Character Sketcher, Discussion Director, Passage Picker, Word Wizard, Summarizer, and Investigator.  I then posted all of this on a webpage for easy access.

C. Impact This is one of the most extensive ways of managing various aspects of your classroom.  Through literature circles, a teacher may differentiate to every reading level in her classroom comfortably.  The students feel comfortable in their own reading level and are able to grasp many aspects of the books they are reading.  They are able to explore these books freely and expressively through the various roles in the literature cirlce.

D. Alignment

  • This project meets competency II.A because it specifically caters to differentiated learning.  The literature circle breaks down all instructional levels and is designed for appropriate learning opportunities to support the diverse needs of learners.  Having the literature circle posted on the web creates a technological advantage as well.
  • This project meets competency VI.B because I am using technology through my posted literature cirlce to empower all learners in diverse backgrounds and ethnicities.  The title of the literature cirlce is called diversity itself!

  • The literature circle meets INTASC principle 5. This principle states that  The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.  The literature circle individualizes instruction and motivates students by placing them in a comfortable reading level.  It creates a learning environment that encourages positive interaction between student and teacher as well as between the students themselves.
