Social
Studies Unit Plan
In our Social Studies Block class,
we were asked to create a unit plan based on the grade we will most likely
be teaching. As a group we decided our unit plan will be based around
folk tales of the Eastern Hemisphere. We each chose certain countries
to research for one of the four weeks. To show connections among
the different folk tales, we have produced a concept map on a computer
program so that we can easily store the information
(10.2).
It will keep us focused on some of the most important areas of folk tales
around the world. In future use, we can return to the concept map
to expand on knowledge for our students.
During one of the four weeks, the students will use a television, VCR,,
and video camera to complete activities throughout the week (12.6).
The students will regularly work with a television and VCR for stations.
They will be expected to know how to turn on the VCR/T.V. to play a tape.
If a problem arises, the students will first attempt to solve the problem
on their own. Hopefully through steps they will solve the problem
before coming ot me. Students will also be acting out folktales that they
have been producing throughout the week and they will be filmed.
the students will film the folktales and then they will edit the tape to
be placed in the library.
During storytelling with the students I chose a bilingual book that can
be told to spanish and english speaking students at the same time (13.3).
It contains different stories that many of the students would be interested
in. Students should not feel like they do not belong just because
they speak a different language. The story has the english and spanish
version next to each other so that the performer stays on track, and helps
students to start recognizing and comparing languages that are not their
own. There should not just be one unit of the year that spanish or
any other language should a part of, because it is becoming more and more
popular in schools. |
