  • For a project on media literacy, I created a lesson plan that involves fifth grade students looking at silent clips from television shows that where taped off cable and movies (12.6).  After viewing the clips, we talk about the importance of body language and expressions when acting.  After our discussion, the students get in groups to write a script of their own from another silent clip based on their observations of the body language and expressions of the actors and actresses.  After completing their scripts, each group will have the opportunity to share their script with the class (12.1).  One way will be to say the dialogue while the program is being viewed by the class to match the script to the motions on the television (12.7).  The use of a television and a VCR to view different forms of media is crucial to studying and learning about media literacy in this lesson so the students will get a better understanding of media.  Television shows and movies are a big part of media literacy and by using a VCR, I was able to bring this large part of media into my classroom for the students to study and explore closely (11.1).  This lesson titled “Can You Write A Script?” meets many of the fifth grade North Carolina Standard Course of Study requirements including Language Arts Skills and Informational Skills.  The lesson plan is available on the World Wide Web so other teachers and professionals will be able to use part or all of this lesson plan in their classroom when teaching about media literacy and body language in particular.  The format of the web page includes direct links, a navigation menu, and still pictures of each media source to make it easy to work through and use (11.2).  I used the Internet to access the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for the fifth grade to determine the appropriate grade level for my lesson and the skills and objectives it would address.  I also found and complied a list of web sites on media and scriptwriting that would be useful in teaching media literacy to the class (10.3).
