For an assignment on ESL (English as a Second Language),
I used the Internet and an ERIC search to look up resources about ESL and
find sites that would help me better teach children who do not speak English
as a first language. I was able to find many lesson plans that I could
modify to use in my classroom and information on ESL. In particular,
I found a lesson plan using an Internet search called "Concentration with
Letters". This lesson is designed to help older children who do not
know English to learn the English alphabet letters in a fun, game-like
way (13.2, 13.3). During my ERIC search, I found a website called
"Practical Ideas on Alternative Assessment for ESL Students". This
website has helped me find ways to assess ESL students that will be helpful
to the students and the search in general has helped me find new ways to
meet a variety of diverse needs through technology (13.4). I plan
to use the lesson and assessment information I have found from my searches
in my classroom in case I need to help a student with English as a Second
Language. I have also gained valuable knowledge as to how to conduct
a search to find information that I will need as a future teacher to help
student's with diverse learning needs.
