Artifact #2:
Developmental Study – a look at how the intellectual, behavioral, emotional and physical development of students affects the significance of media on their purchasing choices.

Context:
As a requirement for my Curriculum and Instruction class during my block experience at ASU, the Developmental Study was conducted with the use of a video camera to record students’ answers.  The answers were then displayed on a webpage using Netscape Composer.

Impact:
This study helps to broaden the understanding of how different types of media influence students and how it relates to their developmental stages.  The project, along with the study done by the class of Fall 2000, can be used as a resource from which one can gather information about a specific grade range.  By understanding the effects that media can play on a specific grade level, the teacher may better understand the actions of his or her students.

Alignment:
The Developmental Study was conducted by interviewing students with questions regarding packaging, gender and consumerism in an attempt to gather information on how the students’ choices are influenced by the media.  The students in my classroom were videotaped in one large interview/discussion session. Information gathered in this study can be accessed via the World Wide Web (Tech. Comp. 12.2).  The web-page can be a valuable resource where teachers and parents may find an understanding of how much students are influenced by the media, and therefore recognize how media can be used in a positive manner in the classroom or at home (Tech Comp. 12.3, INTASC #2).
