Artifact #5:
Software Evaluation:  an analysis of a CD-ROM program that might be used in the classroom as a tool for helping students learns to read.

Context:
This evaluation was done as an assignment for my Curriculum and Instruction class.  It was created using Microsoft Word after installing and reviewing the software on my computer.

Impact:
There are numerous software programs on the market for use in the classroom.  With the overwhelming choices, it is useful to have a collection of reviews to browse through to make the decision easier.  Reviewing this piece of software gave me ideas of what to look for when choosing a program to purchase and use in my classroom.  Only by actually installing and using the CD-ROM can one fully see how useful it will be.

Alignment:
While developing my own opinion of this Software, I also read through other reviews on this same software on the Internet (Tech. Comp. 10.6).  Knowing where to find others’ reviews on a software program is a valuable resource.  Budgeting in the schools can restrict the number of resources a teacher may purchase for the classroom.  By researching reviews already posted by other teachers who have used a program that I am considering, I may be able to determine whether or not it will be a useful resource to have in my room.  Evaluating available software can also help in locating resources for my below or above grade learners in the classroom (Tech. Comp. 13.1).  It is not always possible to try the software myself, but if I do have the opportunity to do so, the reviews already presented can be used as a model.
