Modern Fashion and Invention

Context:  This activity was created in spring 2002 for the class, Integrating Technology into Instruction.  I completed the Modern Fashion and Invention activity and created a website to serve as a resource for teachers and students.  I used Netscape Composer to create the website and a digital camera to take pictures of my invention.

Impact: I would use this project in my class because it is designed to get students interested in inventing, writing, and using technology.  Students pick an interesting used item from a box.  They recreate this item's use, and write a newspaper article or advertisement announcing their invention.  Because this project has many components, the students practice many skills while having a great time. This activity encourages students to think outside of the box.  The Modern Fashion and Invention project integrates language arts, information skills, and computer skills.  It is a time efficient and creative way to teach many ideas and cover many NC Standard Course of Study Competencies.  It demonstrates to the students that writing and technology are linked in everyday life.

NC Standard Course of Study Competencies Covered by this Project:

Fifth Grade:
Language Arts Competencies 4 and 5
Information Skills Competencies 4 and 5
Computer Skills Competencies 2 and 3

Fourth Grade:
Language Arts Competencies 4 and 5
Information Skills Competencies 4 and 5
Computer Skills Competencies 2 and 3

Third Grade:
Language Arts Competencies 4 and 5
Information Skills Competencies 4 and 5
Computer Skills Competencies 2 and 3

Alignment:  This project requires students to use their critical thinking skills to recreate their inventions.  They must look past the real use for the invention and imagine one that is completely different. (IIIC)  It also requires students to use writing skills such as persuasion and description.  (INTASC Standard 4)  The students' learning is managed within a technologically rich environment.  They must decide how to use digital cameras, word processors, and webpage editing programs to create their project. (IIE)  This project teaches the curriculum through the use of technology. (IIIA)  It is a very learner-centered activity.  The teacher's job is to step back and serve as a resource not as an instructor.  (IIIB)(INTASC Standard 4)  There are various ways to assess students' progress on this project and comunicate with the students.  The teacher can informally give students feedback through the use of email.  Also, the teacher will formally grade everyone's webpage according to the rubric. (INTASC Standard 6 & 8) (IVA, IVC)  All sources on this page comply with copyright laws and ethics by acknowledging credit to sources.  Students doing this project will also be required to comply with copyright laws.  (VIA)
