Media Ethnography

Context:  This project was a group assignment for a class called Integrating Technology into Instruction in spring 2002. We surveyed some of the students at Bethel Elementary School about the influence of advertising in their lives.  Then, we used a digital camera to gather evidence of advertising in their lives.  We also gathered images from many types of media such as television, music, and magazines.  We compiled our research in a Power Point presentation.

Impact:  The purpose of this project was to investigate the effects of advertising on the children at Bethel Elementary School, a school where the group was interning.  We presented our findings in Power Point format.  I would use this Power Point presentation to demonstrate to fellow teachers and parents the importance of media literacy for children.

Alignment:   The purpose of this project was to foster a partnership with parents, fellow teachers, and the community to support the learning of students.  (INTASC Standard 10)  (VD)  This project seeks to answer how the media affects student behavior and health. (VID)  In order to do this Power Point presentation, we used technology such as digital cameras, VCRs, and video cameras to collect and analyze data.  We interpreted these results and communicated the findings through a Power Point presentation.  Our presentation included images from digital cameras and video edited by the group.  (IVB)
