A. Title
Textbook Analysis
This Textbook Analysis compares two social studies books. It
gives strengths and weakness of both. Both books have been adopted
by the state of North Carolina.
B. Context
This analysis was created in the spring of 2002 during my senior block.
The project was completed in CI 3110, social studies in the elementary
school.
C. Impact
Every teacher needs to be able to analyze a textbook. This project
made me aware of the different types of textbooks that are available for
use by teachers. This analysis has helped me realize how important the
textbook evaluations are and allowed me to perform an evaluation on my
own so that I can make my own judgments when I am making decisions for
my students in my classroom. By being able to perform a textbook
analysis, I am confident that I will make the right choices to benefit
my students.
D. Alignment
The textbook evaluation allowed me to analyze two social studies textbooks
to determine which would be more appropriate for teaching. I had to evaluate
the textbooks for suitability according to the NC Standard Course of Study.
I was able to make a decision and a conclusion about which of the textbooks
I would prefer to use in my own classroom. (Technology
Standard II C)
When doing my analysis I took into account the diversity shown within
each of the books. For example, did the pictures show diversity?
I think that it is very important to use materials in the classroom that
supports diversity. (Technology Standard
VI C)
By being able to conduct a text book analysis I will be able to choose
a textbook that will allow me to address different learning styles, create
lessons that are suitable for the community and culture that I am teaching
in, and consider curriculum goals in my plans.
