Newsletter

Context:  I produced a newsletter as an assignment for an Instruction and Curriculum course at Appalachian State University, under the guidance of Pam Schram.

Impact:  By creating a newsletter to introduce myself to students and parents of the classroom in which I interned at Bethel Elementary School in Sugar Grove, North Carolina, I learned the value of using technology as a communication tool.  In the newsletter, I included information on my family, hobbies/interests, and work experience, as well as a digital photograph.  Through the newsletter assignment, I determined that I would be interested in using newsletters in my classroom to introduce myself at the beginning of the school year and/or to inform students and parents of assignments, assemblies, fieldtrips, as well as other events and activities.

Alignment:  The newsletter assignment satisfies goal VD of the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers, as well as INTASC Standard X.  By using Microsoft Word and a digital camera to create a newsletter, I illustrated that I can successfully use technology to communicate and collaborate with peers, students, and parents (VD).  Since the newsletter served as a way for me to introduce and describe myself to others, I demonstrated my desire to establish cooperative partnerships with students and parents.  In addition, by using a newsletter to share personal and professional information, I illustrated my interest in establishing a productive and open learning environment (INTASC X).
