Artifact 7: Social Studies Lesson Plan

Context:
The Social Studies Lesson Plan was created in my Social Studies for the Elementary School Class during my pre-service training at Appalachian State in the Fall of 2000.

Impact:
In the a fifth grade class, the Social Studies lesson would be a way to bring together what the children are reading in their literature circles and what is going on in Social Studies.  The lesson is on the time period surrounding the Revolutionary War.  In the lesson, students would research information on important people in the Revolutionary War and eventually make up a skit to perform that will be videotaped and played for the class.  The lesson meets both Language Arts and Social Studies Standard Course of Study.

Alignment:
To wrap up the lesson, students would watch a short video on the Revolutionary War that ties into what they researched and what they have been reading in class (Technology Competency 12.6).  In doing research on the figures in the Revolutionary War, I would have students to site where they found their information and make sure that they are aware of the social, legal, and ethical issues of using information from the Internet (Technology Competency 14.3).  The Social Studies lesson shows my knowledge of the central concepts and how to make learning fun and meaningful to the children through allowing them to do research and come up with their own skits about the Revolutionary War (INTASC Standard 1).
