Literature Circles Unit

Context
This was a unit created for my Reading and Children’s Literature classes at A.S.U. It was created using historical fiction books set during the time period of slavery and the Civil War.  As a group we created a unit that contained lessons for an on grade level, above grade level and below grad level students.

Impact
I will use this lesson in my classroom to teach reading, social studies, and writing. The lesson will be very helpful because it integrates many things and meets many requirements of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. I will also use this lesson as a template for when I want to create literature circles units about other topics or on other grade levels.

Alignment
In this unit students are required to perform tasks that involve using media to collect and analyze information and to draw conclusions based on the information collected.
(Tech. Competency 12.1) This artifact also requires that the teacher select and create learning experiences that are appropriate, effective and use media and technology.
(Tech Competency 12.7) The lesson that I developed includes group work and research which are strategies for learning that require involvement, inquiry, and collaboration.
(Tech. Competency 12.5) Literature circles involve many different approaches to and aspects of learning such as, using computers, artwork, and graphic organizers. These qualities make it a good instructional method to reach diverve learners. (INTASC #3)
