Modern
Fashion and Invention is an activity that involved inventing
something new out of something old and then creating a web page with instructions
and an example for other teachers to use.
Context:
Modern Fashion and Invention was done during
the fall 2001 block experience for the Integrating Media and Technology
into Teaching class. It was done individually and the class was asked
to invent something new out of an object that is of everyday use.
I created a web page using Netscape Composer, a web page editing program.
Impact:
Although this artifact was created in a
college course, it was created including teacher and student instructions
as well as an example. It is now posted on the web so anyone looking for
an activity that is similar to this one will have access to it. The
major focus for this activity is for third through fifth graders.
The students at this age are very creative yet are rather worldly.
There are many objects the students may not be familiar with and some they
will recognize right away. Students in these grades are old enough
to come up with and write about their new invention.
Alignment:
Students will have to use the Internet to
read what this project is about. They will also have to look further
on the student instruction page to find and use the example. They
will be using a computer to word process their newspaper article. The objectives
they will meet are: 2.02, 3.06, 4.02, 4.03, 4.07, 4.09, and 4.10 and Goal
5 of the Language
Arts Curriculum. For the Information
Skills Curriculum objectives 1.05, 2.03, 2.05, 2.06, 3.05, 4.01, 4.03,
4.05, 4.07, 4.09, 4.10, 5.02, and 5.03. Objectives 1.3, 2.1, 2.3,
2.4, and 3.1 will be met of the Computer
Skills Curriculum.
Through this activity, students are asked
to think critically of the object presented to them. It is up to
the teacher to provide them with this activity and explain it to them so
they can do it correctly (INTASC
#4). This artifact is not a cut and dry activity but an activity
that allowed for critical thinking and creative work. Any teacher
who wants to use this activity has access to it through the internet.
Teachers who are looking for a good activity to involve critical thinking
and creative work will easily find one on this web page. (Tech
Comp 5D) The artifact used technology, by putting the instructions
on the World Wide Web, as well as critical thinking because an example
is part of the instructions. If this is used in the classroom, students
have to be creative in creating their brand new invention out of something
old, use technology to type it up to present to the class, as well as critical
thinking to demonstrate how something that we use everyday can be something
new and useful. (Tech Comp 3C) |
