Shrek!:
a lesson that compares the book to the movie and allows students to have
the opportunity to write about the differences.
Context
I did this activity for my Curriculum and
Instruction teaching methods class during my internship at Beech Mountain
my senior year at Appalachian State University. This lesson provides
students the opportunity to see that movies are often very different from
that of the book on which the movie was based. I was in a second,
third, fourth grade combination classroom when I did this activity.
Impact
Students in grades second - fourth are influenced
by what they see on television. Because of the fast paced world they
are growing up in, children very rarely choose to read a book over a movie.
When it comes to understanding what a book might be about, children will
watch the movie and compare it to they think is true. This activity
gave the students the chance to read the book and then compare it to the
movie. We discussed which one was better and why.
We also talked about why the movie had to be changed in order to meet the
demands of the viewing audience.
Alignment
Through this artifact, students will begin
critical thinking of what they are viewing in t.v. and movies. They
will analyze why the movie producers and director and screenplay writers
changed the story line so much to create the movie Shrek. This lesson
plan will be part of a strategy for students to look beyond technology
into books and other sources. However, through the use of the t.v.
and even looking up information on the Internet, students will be exposed
to the use of technology and how it can help them find out about Shrek!
(Tech Comp 2E). With the influence
of media on children today, this lesson plan is created to show how much
movies change something so solid. A book was written more than 10
years ago, yet is changed drastically to meet the needs and desires of
the audience. This lesson is a critical thinking activity that makes
students look beyond what is right in front of them. It is based
on not only the curriculum goals of the information skills, but is also
based on what influences students and the community (INTASC
