Artifact One

This artifact is a printout of the Computer/Technology Skills Curriculum AND the Document on the 8th Grade Computer Skills Test

Rationale for Artifact One:  Computer/Technology Skills Curriculum AND Document on the 8th Grade Computer Skills Test

Competency 10.1:  “Use the computer skills curriculum to identify what students should be able to do.”

Competency 10.5:  “The NC Skills Assessment:  Utilize available released items (knowledge and performance) as assessment for computer skills for your appropriate grade level/subject.”

CONTEXT

I created this artifact during the Summer of 2001 in Classroom Use of the Microcomputer in grades K-12.  To complete this artifact, it was my job to obtain a printout of the NC computer technology skills.  In order to do this, I went online to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction website at www.ncdpi.org.  I then clicked on curriculum and chose a specific grade level.  Finally, I read and printed out the competencies.  The artifact also requires you to obtain a copy of a document on the 8th Grade Computer Technology Skills.  I obtained the document from the internet at www.ncpublicschools.org.

IMPACT

As a future educator, I will be licensed to teach grades K-6 in the state of North Carolina.  I am aware that there are six strands in computer skills for all public school students in North Carolina.  The six strands include: 1) Keyboard utilization, Word Processing, and Desktop Publishing, 2) Telecommunications, 3) Societal Issues (Ethics), 4) Databases, 5) Spreadsheets and 6) Multimedia and Presentation.

ALIGNMENT

The printout of the NC Computer Skills aligns with Technology Competency 10.1 .  As a future NC public educator, it will be my job to know and to incorporate these skills into the classroom.

The printout of the 8th Grade testing aligns with Technology Competency 10.5 .  This document informs the teacher of the skills students should be able to complete and achieve.  I, as an educator, am responsible for helping students get ready for the testing.
