Artifact Nine
The Ethnography Project is a project designed based upon an area Watagua County Elementary School. This project allows others to see how the media effects students attitudes as well as what students buy and wear. Rationale for Artifact Nine: Ethnography Project Competency 12.2: "Use computers and other technologies effectively and appropriately to collect information on student learning using a variety of methods." CONTEXT I created this artifact during my block experience of my senior year at ASU. I worked in a cooperative group of eight to complete this project. We went around the area elementary school and took pictures with a digital camera of things that we thought were affected by the media. We then edited and resized the pictures by using Adobe Photoshop, so that they would fit on a web page. We used Netscape Composer to complete and design a set of web pages. Each page displayed information we found within the school. Some of the topics included within the pages were possessions, media around the school, gender roles, student attitudes, and reactions to the day of terror. From our project, we found that each topic had some type of effect on the students at this school. IMPACT As a future licensed educator, I will now be aware of how the media effects students within a school. I have realize that the media has an impact on the lives of all people, including children and I, as a teacher, need to approach these things on a daily basis. ALIGNMENT The ethnography project aligns with Technology Competency 12.2 because this shows students how to effectively use a computer and technology, if they were to create a web site to show information about a certain product they have created themselves. From this, students are learning how to present information by using a computer and technology. This artifact meets INTASC
principle 2 because it teaches others about how the media effects students.
It gives teachers a better idea of how a child learns and develops through
the media. In order to help students develop further, you could assign
students a project to investigate ways in which they think that the media
affects them as well as other people. This project would be a great
way to share with children how they develop their intellectually, socially,
and personally.
