Artifact Three
The Inquiry Project Presentation prospective teachers about meeting the needs of various diverse learners in an elementary school classroom. This artifact gives a short overview of several behavioral disorders that a teacher may encounter within the classroom. There are also ideas mentioned regarding ways to deal with these specific behavioral disorders. The project was designed to help me communicate information as well as develop a sense of well-being and speaker traits, while the audience learned about the characteristics of behavioral disorders. Rationale for Artifact Three: Inquiry Project Presentation Competency 13.2: "Use media and technology to support learning for children with special needs." Competency 13.3: "Use media and technology to support learning for children whose primary language is not English." Competency 13.4: "Use appropriate local, state, and national services or resources to meet diverse learning needs through technology." CONTEXT I created this artifact during my block experience of my senior year. This artifact was created and developed to teach others of about various types behavioral disorders among students. I worked in a cooperative group to generate information that was included within the project. My group's project focused mainly on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), however other disorders such as BEH and ODD were also discussed within the presentation. To complete this artifact, I used Microsoft Powerpoint to create a simple outline for the in class presentation. This presentation provided my classmates and peers mainly with an outline of ADHD and ADD. Within the presentation ways to treat children with these disorders in the classroom and at home were revealed. Three other groups within my block focused on additional topics such as ESL (English as a Second Language), cognitive disorders, and Title I. From each individual presentation, I was taught something new and interesting that I previously had never known before. I will be able to use this in my classroom in the near future. IMPACT By completing this project, I as a future licensed teacher of grades K-6, will be more aware of specific behavioral disorders that I will encounter within my classroom. This project gave me the opportunity to do extensive research in an area of special and behavioral needs. From this I have become better informed about the diverse learners I will have the privilege of teaching in the near future. I gained an in-depth understanding of certain behavioral and learning disorders as well as the respective curriculum adjustments that must be made for each student. ALIGNMENT The inquiry project presentation aligns with Technology Competency 13.2 because it allows me to use media and technology to support those students with special needs. I used a variety of resources from the Internet in order to get information in which I shared with my classmates, peers, and colleagues. My group members and I put some of the information on behavioral disorders we learned about into a presentation by using Microsoft Power Point so that we could share it with our classmates. The inquiry project presentation also aligns with Technology Competency 13.3 . Teachers are often bombarded and filled with stress and anxiety as they try to teach children who are unable to speak English. Teachers can utilize the information provided on ESL and find web sites which present ideas to aid in ESL learning. The inquiry project presentation also aligns with Technology Competency 13.4 . Through the process of inquiry, my group members and I found that there are professionals, especially at state universities, in particular ASU, who will give advice about how to deal with students who have behavior disorders. There are also many local, state, and national centers that help students overcome their behavior disorders as well. This artifact also meets INTASC
principle 9
. Among the prospective teachers I presented my inquiry project to,
they already had some knowledge and experience with working with students
with behavioral disorders. This project provided me with an opportunity
to learn and to contribute to my own professional growth. I was able
to reflect on my teaching during the presentation, which also contributed
to my professional growth. The reflection process gave me the chance
to assess my teaching and my students learning. Learning how to be
reflective and self assessing about my practice will be critical for my continued
growth as a prospective teacher. |
