Artifact Four

The Ella Enchanted Video Project is a cross curriculum activity that connects children's literature with technology.  This video project is based upon Gail Carson Levine's Newbery Honor Book Ella Enchanted.

Rationale for Artifact Four:  Ella Enchanted Video Project

Competency 10.2:  "Use school television resources that support the curriculum."

Competency 11.3:  "Use technology based tools that are specific to the discipline."

Competency 12.6:  "Resources available including satellite, cable, wireless, and ITFS (Instrucional Television Fixed Service)."

CONTEXT

I created this artifact my senior year during my block experience.  I worked with a cooperative group of four to create a video based upon the novel Ella Enchanted.  My group discussed and planned out  a script for the project.  We used digital video cameras to shoot and record the acts.  Afterwards, we used the Macintosh i Movie program to edit the video.  We edited the video by importing clips from the digital video camera onto the computer.  We clipped out scenes, split scenes in to, added music and sound effects, and added visual aids to make it seem like an actual professional movie/video.  My group's finished product is a news broadcast which includes top stories from the novel Ella Enchanted.  The entire video production was put together and is made up of clips from my group as well as my classmates video clips.

IMPACT

As a future licensed teacher, I will be responsible for knowing how to use the latest forms of technology.  The skills involved in creating this film will be very useful within my classroom.  By completing this project I have learned a variety of different ways to use technology in which children will enjoy seeing.  I feel that this project is an excellent way for children to use technology to create a video that shows the child's parent what they are participating in and learning about during a school day.

ALIGNMENT

This artifact aligns with Technology Competency 10.2 because it allowed me to use school television resources which support the curriculum to create a video based upon children's literature.

The Ella Enchanted Video Project aligns with Technology Competency 11.3 because I used technology based tools that support a specific discipline.  I created a video which was based upon a children's novel, therefore I was able to use a digital video camera to capture clips on tape to do this.

This artifact aligns with Technology Competency 12.6 because during the editing process of the video, a clip from a movie was used.  Therefore, this shows and proves that I can use cable within classroom related activities.

The Ella Enchanted Video Project meets INTASC principle 8. Using a video to assess student learning may not be a traditional, but it can be a very effective learning tool.  Students can clearly demonstrate, through this activity, what they have learned from reading the novel.  Students will realize that, in order to have a quality production, they will need to know how to utilize pieces of technology.  By participating in this activity, students will be able to  improve their social skills by working closely in cooperative groups.  It is important that we, as educators, ensure that our students are continually developing, and this activity is a great way to provide this development.  This project will also check for student understanding, by seeing if a student can correctly complete the task, as well as understand the ideas which are being taught.
