Artifact 4:
Bird's Eye View

Context:
I participated in this activity during my Social Studies methods class while attending Appalachian State University.

Impact:
By researching Social Studies curriculums on the internet, I used the North Carolina Standard Course of study to modify this activity for the appropriate level.

Alignment:
Bird's Eye View is a year long and interactive activity where you send a toy bird  to another state in the country.  Upon arrival the person will send back to the class information about their community, pictures of that area, brochures, and any other valuable information the sender would like to include.  After the person is finished with the cardinal we request that the bird is sent to another person in a different community or state.   This is a great ongoing project for the entire school year.  This project can be easily modified to meet the North Carolina Social Studies standard course of study that can be researched on the internet  for all grade levels (Tech. II.B).  Kindergarten can concentrate on their school community and send the bird to the secretary, prinicipal, etc...  While third graders can concentrate on their local community and send their bird to the courthouse, fire department, police station, and so on (INTASC Principle #7).  By looking at the NCSCS web-site I was able to learn and modify Bird's Eye View to fit many grade levels (Tech. V.A).  This activity can be used to elaborate your and student's knowledge about any given location.
