Modern Fashion and Invention

Context:
During the fall semester of 2002 I was able to participate in a project called Modern Fashion and Invention.  The project consisted of taking a normal product and creating a new use and invention for it.  This web page that I created gave me a chance to broaden my knowledge on several technology aspects. There was group involvement at the beginning of the project but then branched out as an individual task.

Impact:
I would use this project in my class because it is designed to get students interested in inventing, writing, and using technology.  Students pick an item they find interesting from a box.  They recreate this item's use, and write a newspaper article or advertisement announcing their invention.  Due to the fact that this project has many components, the students practice many skills while having a fun time. This activity encourages students to use the knowledge they already have to create something new and creative.  The Modern Fashion and Invention project integrates language arts, information skills, and computer skills.  It is a time efficient and creative way to teach many ideas and meet several NC Standard Course of Study Competencies.  It demonstrates to the students that writing and technology are linked in everyday life.

Alignment:
The Modern Fashion Invention aligns with Technology Competency IV C.  I have set up a template for teachers to evaluate student's performance on this project as an assessment.  The NC Computer Skills Assessment, which is part of the NC Standard Course of Study, is used to develop test items involving computer skills for assessment of other instructional objectives.  “The N.C. Skills Assessment: Utilize available released items (knowledge and performance) as assessment for computer skills for your appropriate grade level/subject.”

INTASC:
The Modern Fashion Invention aligns with INTASC 2 which evaluates the students thinking as a basis for instructional activities through group as well as individual interaction and written work.  According to the INTASC standards, I put specific instructions, on the teacher page and student page of what is expected and the best way to take full advantage of the web.  I gave instructions on how to do this project both individually and as a group, using examples and interaction. I created a rubric that allows for the teacher as well as the student to know what they will be graded and assessed on.
