Literature
Circle
Context:
I created a literature circle unit with
several other students in my class on mysteries. We used resources
such as Netscape Navigator, Netscape Composer, and Adobe Photoshop to set
our lit circle up on the web.
Impact:
I think this project really helped me see
how neat it is for students to be able to read on their own reading level,
and yet still participate in the same activities as everyone else.
Students don’t have to feel overwhelmed or out of place they can be involved
in the same themes and activities as a class. The books are broken
up into sections and everyone in the group is assigned a job. This
allows for everyone to participate in discussion and everyone have a different
contribution to the group.
Alignment:
This aligns with the Technology
Competencies II A. This literature circle unit will
be helpful to me as a teacher and allow me to meet the needs of every student
in my class. Not only do I need to be able to create lessons that
adhere to the Standard Course of Study but also I need to provide learning
opportunities to children with diverse learning styles and abilities.
I also need to be able to create units that integrate many subject areas
with a variety of activities. This unit allows for students to actively
participate in their education while learning at their reading ability.
The student’s perform certain jobs, access the Internet, and work in groups
with teacher monitoring but not teacher led. This unit not only takes
into account the needs of individual students but also allows the entire
class to be working on a theme or unit. This unit shows how each
child has differing needs and how the teacher needs to take in account
these needs.
INTASC:
Literature Circle aligns with the INTASC
1. This allows for
the teacher to use tools of inquiry to
teach the students. The students' needs are met by allowing them
to learn on their specific level which makes reading meaningful and relevant
for them as individual learners.
