  • Portrait of a Learner

  • During my internship at Beech Mountain Elementary School my Senior year, I chose a student from a combination second third grade class to focus a great deal of attention on.  His name was Billy.  Throughout the semester, I conducted spelling, reading, and math assessments to Billy and other students in the classroom.  I word processed the results of the assessments as well as reflections of what I had learned through the assessments.  This assignment gave me the opportunity to get to know and work one-on-one with a student while learning about a variety of assessments.  Along with the assessments I produced a video from footage taken throughout the semester of my portrait student that portrayed him during a "typical" school day.

This assignment corresponds with the spelling, reading, and math NC Standard Course of Study.  The Portrait of a Learner product will be useful for me as a teacher having experimented with a variety of assessments.  Through this I will best be able to meet the  needs of all levels of my students.  Furthermore, I can use the video to show other teachers how media can be used to assess students.

A large part of the Portrait of a Learner assignment dealt with the production of a video about my student.  Through doing this video I collected footage of Billy in a variety of school settings, especially academics.  While watching the product, I discovered many secrets to the way Billy learns (12.2).  After the video is complete, I will present this to his parents and to administration from Beech Mountain Elementary School (12.3).
