  • During my Senior year at Appalachian State University, two classmates and I wrote a media literacy lesson plan on body image and put that material into the form of a web page.  The lesson plan was targeted to a second grade level.  It was produced to show students the influence media has on people's opinions toward body image.  Our goal was to show students that they have the power to understand media and change the way body image is perceived.

This product corresponds with the information skills and language arts NC Standard Course of Study.  As a web page this lesson plan will be available to other teachers.  This web page includes the lesson plan as well as a reflection of the way the teaching of the lesson went, which will be useful for a teacher considering using it.

The lesson plan will be available on the internet as a resource for teachers to find a lesson plan about body image as well as multiple links that focus on body image in today's society (10.3).  During the lesson a variety of clips from movies will be shown to the students to portray the way the media stereotypes body image (11.1).  We will use these video clips as well as pictures from the internet to have students to analyze the influences of media (12.1).  Along with the videos, pictures of various ethnic groups and time periods will be shown to the students so they realize and comprehend how media influences many different people (11.2).  Students will be divided into small groups to analyze and discuss the various clips from movies as well as magazines (12.5).  By viewing these clips students will gain more understanding of technology and it's effects on society (11.4).  At the end of the lesson, students will be required, based on knowledge they have learned, to create a future ad that is based on inner worth instead of outer appearances (12.7).
