  • Social Studies Textbook Evaluation

  • While working on my elementary education degree at Appalachian State University, I completed a social studies textbook analysis for my Social Studies in the Elementary School course.  The analysis was done by comparing two current second grade textbooks previously considered in the Watauga County School system.  I compared content between the two textbooks, for example, is language suitable for that particular grade level and was there clear and concise movement of topics throughout the book.

As a teacher, the textbook analysis will be useful because I will have prior knowledge of the content that should be considered when comparing or choosing between any given textbooks.  This analysis will also be used to help other teachers that I work with that may not have been given the opportunity to work with textbooks before.

As part of this assignment, I chose two fairly current textbooks from the library to evaluate.  Then I compared those textbooks to see which would be the best choice for a second grade classroom.  After I did the analysis I typed a two page summary describing why I chose the textbook I did and why I thought it was better than the other, being sure to provide examples (10.6).
