Rationale for the Artifact: Modern Fashion Invention

Competency 10.5: The North Carolina Computer Skills Assessment

Context

I started by opening Netscape Navigator and using a template that was pre made for our usage. In order to edit the pages to my discretion, I had to go into Netscape Composer and click on edit page. Once I clicked on edit page I was able to make changes, add color, change fonts, etc. I began by clicking on The master page that was part of the template, and started to create my own web page. I added images from the Internet, using Adobe Photoshop and a digital camera. I moved on to the teacher page where I created a page that teachers could go to and have a complete lesson to follow as well as a grading rubric to go by. This page contained links to Adobe Photoshop and Netscape so that the teacher could link right to it. The teacher page was followed by the student page, which was basically the same as the teacher page except it was more student friendly and has more details to go by. The student page also contains a grading rubric to keep the students focused on what they will be graded on as well as my email address in case they need extra help. The student page is linked to the example page which contains a detailed example of what the students finished project will look like.

Impact

As a teacher, I will use the modern fashion inventory as  a way to integrate media in alignment with Language Arts. By having the students write a newspaper article and use a digital camera, they become familiar with the technological world that has consumed us. It motivates creativity as well as knowledge, and it can be something that they can be proud of forever. This project meets many competencies and is fun. Although it may be challenging, the students get out of it what they need to become somewhat technologically savvy. Links to the NC Curriculum are provided below.

Alignment

The Modern Fashion Invention aligns with Technology Competency 10.5. The NC Computer Skills Assessment of the NC Standard Course of Study is utilized to develop test items involving computer skills for assessment of other instructional objectives. Utilize available released items (knowledge and performance) as assessment for computer skills for your appropriate grade level/subject.

The Modern Fashion Invention aligns with INTASC principle 2, which assesses student thinking as a basis for instructional activities through group/individual interaction and written work (listening, encouraging discussion, eliciting samples of student thinking orally and in writing). In accordance with this INTASC standard, I gave explicit instructions, both on the teacher page and student page what they were to do to utilize the web as best as possible. I gave instructions on how to do this project both individually and as a group, using examples and interaction. I created a rubric that allowed the teacher as well as the student to know what they will be graded and assessed on.
