Rationale
for the Artifact: Designing An Accessible Computer Lab
Competency 12.4: Physical settings that support active student involvement, inquiry, and collaboration. Context For this artifact, we collaborated in groups and came up with a list of ideas that we thought would be useful for an accessible computer lab. We then had a whole class discussion about our individual ideas and came up with a master list. Impact As a teacher, I will be taking my students to the computer lab. I am going to have students that have special needs, such as visually/hearing impaired, physically/tactile impaired, etc. I will address those needs in my classroom and will address them in the computer lab. I need that computer lab to be as well equipped as ipossible, so that those students receive the full benefits and are not left to just deal with it. Alignment Designing an Accessible Computer Lab aligns with Technoogy Competency 12.4 because we can help provide input on the planning of technology classroom utilization for new facilities and on remodeling, and renovations of existing facilities. We need to establish classroom/areas with the physical atmosphere reflecting technology utilization and display student (individual and collaborative) technology projects. We must arrange the classroom furniture to facilitate cooperative learning using technology. Designing an Accessible Computer Lab aligns with INTASC principle 5. Kids enjoy the computer lab and deserve for it to be as user friendly as possible. Designing an accessible lab allows for more productivity to occur and makes the time spent there more enjoyable. An equipped computer lab also allows for group engagements and the proper materials to provide for a professional presentation. Computer Labs with wheel chair access allow for the disabled to receive the same benefits and make their time as well more enjoyable.
