Artifact 4- Textbook Evaluation

The Social Studies text evaluation is a teaching and curriculum resource for teachers.

Context

Faculty and staff choose most textbooks.  In order for the appropriate texts to be chosen, they do an assessment on a text.

Impact

For my Social Studies class we viewed two textbooks.  We had to evaluate it and find its pros and cons.  Does it cover NCSCS for Social Studies?  Is it sequenced into an easy to read format?  This textbook assessment satisfies the 10.6 technology competency goal.

Alignment

The Social Studies textbook assessment falls under the 10.6 technology competency and the INTASC standards number 1,2, 7. INTASC standard number 1 is met becuase the teacher's goals is to select material that is effective in learning and meaningful for students.  It satifies INTASC standard 2 because shoosing an appropriate text to use can foster a student's intellextual, social and personal development by providing learning opportunities located within the text.  This artifact also meets INTASC standard 7 because the teacher bases her decision on a text book by its strengths and weaknesses of the subject matter as it relates to the student's community and to the curriculum goals.  This assessment allows teachers to focus on the content within the book to see if it will comply with the curriculum for Social Studies. The assignment consisted of a questionnaire to focus on important criteria that a good Social Studies text should have.
