  • Social Studies Textbook Evaluation

  • This Social Studies textbook evaluation was developed as part of my Social Studies Methods Course during Block at ASU.  It includes an in-depth examination of two third grade social studies textbooks.  As part of the assignment, we were asked to evaluate the structure, content, and organization of the complete text.  We also looked at the concept development and vocabulary density throughout the chapters.

The textbook evaluation will be helpful to me as a teacher.  It allows me to be thorough in analyzing textbooks for use in my classroom.  By knowing how to properly evaluate a textbook, I should be able to choose the best one for my students.  A quality textbook will improve my students’ comprehension of particular subject matter.

This textbook evaluation corresponds to the NC Standard Course of Study because the text should completely cover all of the competency goals listed.  It is helpful to look at these goals when evaluating texts to ensure that the authors are thorough in their coverage of the subject.  This evaluation will help me locate, evaluate, and select  the best materials for my students (10.6).   The evaluation also allows me to demonstrate knowledge through practical application by being aware of the social, legal, and ethical issues related to copying textbooks without permission (14.3)
