In a Language Arts methods class, I was required to do a group project
and plan a language arts unit. For the unit, we had to plan a launch
activity that introduces the students to the historical fiction era that
we were covering. As part of our launch activity, we show a clip
from the television show, Little House on the Prairie.
This unit plan showed me how to introduce new ideas to students.
The clip is a good way for students to get the much needed visuals to see
the time period that we were covering. Using television clips can
help bring across abstract ideas to children.
This unit plan meets the competency goal 10.2
because we used the television as a resource to support the curriculum
goals that are included in the unit. It also meets 12.6
because of the use of the television show in the classroom for educational
purposes.
