Artifact Eleven:  This artifact is a video production based on the book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Context
We created this video during me Elementary Block at ASU. We used digital camcorders to tape the events, and Macintosh iMovie to edit the clips.

Impact
The skills involved in creating this film will be very useful in my classroom. I plan to use these skills in teaching children how to create a movie. What student would be uninterested in creating their own movie? Students will learn about the book they are reading, as well as learning how to express themselves by using technology.

Alignment
The experience of creating a class movie that depicts ideas from a reading selection meets many elementary NC Technology and Language Arts Curriculum Goals. This strategy would be especially effective for students who are interested or excited about using media to express themselves (NC Technology Competency 12.7). Using a class video to assess student learning may not be a traditional, formal practice, but it can be an effective, informal one. Students can clearly demonstrate, through this activity, what they have learned from the reading selection. Students will realize that, in order to have a quality production, they will need to know how to physically utilize the technology, besides needing to know the content of the selection. Students will be improving their social skills by working closely with group members. It is important that as educators we ensure that our students are continually developing, and this activity is a excellent way to provide for this development. A video production is also a useful tool for checking student understanding. The student must demonstrate that they can correctly complete the task, as well as that they understand the concepts that are being presented (INTASC Principle 8).
