Artifact Eight: This artifact is an example of a newsletter to parents, communicating information on what will be going on in the class that year.

Context
I created this newsletter during a technology class my senior year at ASU. I used Microsoft Publisher to design the format of the newsletter. I imported clip art and a digital photograph into this artifact.

Impact
I will use a newsletter like this to ensure that I am communicating clearly with the parents of my students. This artifact is an example of the first in a series of letters to parents. It is an overview of what to expect for the year, and an introduction to me. It is necessary to be in touch with parents, and by taking the initiative, maybe they will be more open to being in touch with me.

Alignment
Parents play a very big role in the climate of the classroom. I hope to set a good example for parents by encouraging good communication between parent, child and teacher. A simple letter could serve the same purpose of this newsletter, but I feel this enhanced and colorful format shows them how important the class is to me (NC Technology Competency 12.3). By taking the initiative in communicating with parents, I hope the action will be reciprocated. Many of the outcomes of parental involvement in the school lead to higher levels of student involvement and achievement. I hope that parents will cooperate with me in my attempts to make the classroom into more of a family at school (INTASC Principle 10).
