Artifact Nine: This artifact is a list
of characteristics to ensure a computer lab that is accessible to all
students.
Context
This list was created following a discussion in a technology
class my senior year at ASU. The discussion was about the importance of
having a computer lab that all students have equal access to.
Impact
This list provides me with the assurance that all of my students
will be able to effectively use a computer. The list even includes items
that a student with special needs might require to be able to productively
use a computer.
Alignment
The physical setting of a computer lab must be structured enough to
keep children active and motivated to learn while in the lab (NC
Technology Competency 12.4). By making provisions for students with
wheel chairs, visual, or auditory difficulties, the computer lab can be
an environment for all learners to be comfortable in (NC
Technology Competency 14.2). Children tend to find technology very
exciting. Visits to the computer lab can be times of great fun and learning.
Students with physical or learning disabilities may struggle in a improperly
prepared computer lab. Students with visual problems will be able to clearly
see the display if it is projected on to a large screen, or if the student
uses the oversized moniter. The non-glare covers will help all students.
The room will be adapted to accomodate students who are wheelchair bound.
This means wide and clear spaces between computers, and desks that are
compatible to wheelchairs. To be sure that the trip is meaningful, the
teacher must set up an environment that is accessible to all learners and
that encourages active learning (INTASC
Principle 5).
