Artifact: Vocabulary Unit This was part of a comprehension unit, focusing on vocabulary, done for the Master Reading Class Reading and Writing Instruction for Intermediate and Advanced Learners.

Context: This was done as part of a comprehension unit focusing on the development of vocabulary to enhance  understanding and comprehension of stories read. Research supports the use of vocabulary development to increase comprehension. This shows a lesson based upon a book read to students. The lesson can be adapted to various grade levels. Tier one words are chosen based upon the developmental and instructional level of the grades being instructed. The lesson included activities focusing on the chosen words. There was also one speed drill, which would be given half through the course of doing activities and and second speed drill towards the end. These help to determine the students level of understanding. The lesson was ended with an assessment. The assessment had a variety of ways for the students to respond. This enables a student to show understanding in a variety of ways. My students enjoy doing the activities involving new vocabulary words. They look forward to being introduced to new words through out the year. My students enjoy having the vocabulary words introduced before the story and having these words posted on our vocabulary wall. My students have now started incorporating these words into their writing.
