Online Interpreters and Spanish Resources
Context:
In my Block at Appalachian State University, finding
a way to meet the needs of diverse learners, such as those who do not speak
English, recently became an issue. I located a feature on the Yahoo!
search engine main web
page that allows you to change the language in which
the information is presented. This would be most helpful
for your non-English speaking students. I also found some translation
sites such as http://www.freetranslation.com
and http://www.dictionary.com/translate
. Using computers to aid ESL students is a huge advantage that
we as teachers should be aware o
f and take advantage of whenever possible..
Impact:
The language change feature can be a valuable tool in
a classroom with an ESL student. This option is very helpful in educating
people of all ages when their ability to learn is limited by the language
they speak. The activities on these web sites help raise awareness
for the use of different languages and are appropriate for teacher and
student use.
Alignment:
The language option on the Yahoo! main web page and the
translating abilities available elsewhere on the internet are examples
of ways to use technology to support the needs of children for whom English
is a second language. It is a valuable asset to both teachers and
students (VIB).
