Story Pictures Lesson Plan:  an on-line, creative sequencing lesson for third graders, in which they will compose a creative short story

Context

This lesson plan was engineered during my pre-service instruction at Appalachian State University.  It was a competency covered in my Integrating Media and Techology with Classroom Instruction course.

Impact

Accessibility to this on-line lesson plan is unlimited to other teachers, as well as pre-service teachers.  NC Standard Course of Study competency goals for third grade were met in the areas of Technology/Computer Skills and Language Arts and can be reached through the links posted on the lesson plan webpage.

Alignment

This activity meets the competency goals for third grade Technology/Computer Skills (Tech Comp 10.1).  It also meets third grade NCSCS Language Arts competency goals.  The lesson style facilitates different learning and teaching strategies present in the classroom, because students will discuss and compose in their groups.  This activity successfully incorporates computer skills into a lesson in which students must utilize different computer equipment (i.e., a digital camera, the computer).  Students must demonstrate skills through story and file creation (Tech Comp 10.4).  In this activity, computer technology is used to communicate directions for the activity, as well as displaying the end product composed by the students (Tech Comp 11.1).  Assessment will be achieved through observing the displayed final product, as well as a written description of the copy/paste procedure.  Students will be evaluated on their success in copying and pasting the pictures from the webpage to their word processing document, which will help prepare them for future word processing tasks (Tech Comp 10.5).  Technology is used to gather, sequence and present the story, while students use their own creative writing ideas as a language arts component (Tech Comp 11.4).  This aspect is important in teaching the concept of logical sequencing.
