Reading Assessment:  using the ERSI (Early Reading Screening Instrument) to assess the reading ability of a student

Context

This assessment was completed for my Reading Instruction for Classroom Teachers class at Appalachian State University during my pre-service training

Impact

This form of assessment is comprehensive evaluation of a student's ability to decode and read words, and is helpful in determining the student's appropriate reading level.

Alignment

This assessment asks the student to read short stories, sight words, and to find predetermined words within the story.  There is a test on the alphabet, as well as a list of spelling words for each grade level, to be used for the spelling test portion of the assessment.  Teachers should use this assessment throughout the year to track student progress in reading and decoding.  Doing so will ensure the continuous and wholistic development of the student (INTASC 8).
