Classroom Bill of Rights Windsock:  a display of classroom rules which the class as a whole has compiled

Context

This strategy was introduced in my Social Studies in Elementary Schools course during my pre-service training at Appalachian State University.

Impact

This activity introduces the concept of democracy in deciding on classroom discipline, and includes the students in the decision making process.

Alignment

In this activity, students will be asked for suggestions for classroom rules at the beginning of the year.  All suggestions should be taken into consideration by the entire class.  After discussing the merits of each suggestion, 5-6 of the most important and applicable rules should be adopted into the Classroom Bill of Rights, and displayed in the room.  This activity effectively and democratically includes the students in decisions on how to maintain classroom discipline (INTASC 5).
