Artifact 1:  Picture Stories

Context: 
This web page was created as a part of my Integrating Media into the Classroom course at Appalachian State University.  This is an online lesson plan for third graders in which they use pictures to develop the story for a creative writing assignment.  After studying the pictures on the web page the students will place the pictures in the order that they believe is correct.  Next the students will arrange the pictures and develop a creative story to go along with the pictures.

Impact: 
This web page corresponds to the NC Standard Course of Study for both Language Arts and Technology; competencies addressed can be found in the lesson plan.  As a web page, this lesson plan will be available to other teachers.

Alignment:
The web page includes a lesson plan that helps to teach an aspect of media literacy and creative writing through sequencing.  By using their creativity and technology, the student’s will sequence the events and making up a creative story to accompany the pictures.  The finishing product will be produced on a word processing program so that students will be able to display their work in the classroom or throughout the school.
As a part of evaluating this project, I will be looking to see if the students can copy and paste effectively (Tech Comp 10.1).  When they have finished they will write up the directions for copying and pasting (Tech Comp 10.5).  This activity uses technology to facilitate teaching strategies specific to the discipline of Language Arts because the web page encourages creative writing.  Even though the students’ pictures are not in the same order the students use logical progression to create an open-ended story (Tech Comp 11.4).   In this lesson plan I have created a website that can be used as future reference for others and this lesson plan will assess the students ability to copy and paste effectively (Tech Comp 10.4).  The students’ ability to copy and paste effectively and their ability to write up directions for the activity in which they are to complete will be assessed informally and formally (INTASC #8).
