Artifact 5: NEWS PAPER ACTIVITY: Social Needs

Context:
This lesson plan was created during my CI 3850: Literacy, Technology and Instruction class at Appalachian State University.  The following lesson plan will help the students identify ways in which people of their State meet their social needs.  After researching North Carolina cultural activities the students will create a word processing document of their findings.

Impact:
After this assignment students will be able to develop categories of social needs and post their findings on a chart.  Students will also be able to identify ways in which people meet their social needs in NC (e.g. NC State Fair).  Before the assignment a class discussion will be held to grasp the concepts of social needs (i.e. social, family, and religious activities).  Students will begin looking for clippings of NC cultural activities in newspapers and cut the articles out in groups.  After choosing an event, each student will write a descriptive paragraph about the event.  Students will then type up their paragraphs using their computer skills and print out a hard copy to turn in.  Each student will then edit and revised a paragraph in cooperative groups and then a revised copy will be made for each student.
*As an extra assignment to make sure the students understand what they have just completed, you can have them complete a computer journal describing their work on this project*

Alignment:
After the completion of this assignment the students shall be able to locate and evaluate resources.  They will have accomplished by using the resources in the classroom, home, library, etc.  The resources are unlimited; they range from the Internet, dictionaries, encyclopedias, magazines, newspapers, etc., what ever they can find that
provides correct information about their subject matter (INTASC # 7).  By completing the computer journal, the students will use computers/technology to communicate to their classmates, parents, and to me what they have learned through this assignment (Tech Comp12.3).  Demonstration of knowledge through application of social, family, cultural issues (Tech Comp 14.3) will be developed through class discussion and the presentation of each student’s research.
