Artifact 7:  ESL Inquiry Project

Context:
This artifact was created as a part of my Curriculum and Instruction course, at Appalachian State University.  It provides a genuine peer teaching context that allows you to put into practice what you know about engaging learners in meaningful learning experiences.

Impact:
This artifact helps you learn to analyze case studies about diverse learners in your classroom.  It provides helpful information to help you assist the students in your classroom and give them a good environment to learn in.

Alignment:
These websites could be used as references to better assist your students.  You will have to adapt your lesson plan to make sure that each students needs are being met.  For example to meet the needs of an ESL student you can use picture books, carefully balance academic content with instructional processes, use group work, build on what students already know, connect lessons with examples from the “real world”, etc (INTASC #2).  The websites (Tech Comp 13.4) included in this project outline can be beneficial to the ESL students in your classroom.  Several websites such as “Babelfish” and “Yahoo in Spanish” can translate English words in to the native language (Tech Comp 13.3) of your ESL student.  By using these resources your ESL student can still participate and feel a part of the class. (Tech Comp 13.2)  The findings for this project were discussed in my Curriculum and Instruction course and as part of my evaluation I had to evaluate myself after teaching (INTASC #9) – see reflection.
