Artifact 9:  Literature Circles

Context:
This unit plan was created as a part of my RE 3142 course, at Appalachian State University, to accommodate the different reading levels within a classroom.

Impact:
This unit plan is on Slavery and the Civil War that accommodates the different reading levels that can be found within a lesson plan.  The students will be divided into four groups and given specific books on their reading level to read.  As they make their way through each of the books, each student will complete a job task that relates to a specific section of the book.

Alignment:
At the completion of this unit plan the each student will have read books on their reading level.  The classroom will be divided into 4 groups – 2 below grade level (3rd grade), below grade level (4th grade), on grade level (5th grade), and above grade level (5th grade) (INTASC # 3). Each group will complete a series of task in six sections that ask the students to locate and analyze information as well as draw conclusions and use media to present their findings in group discussions (Tech Comp 12.1) This unit plan incorporates cooperative learning, each student will have a specific job to complete.  At the end of each section the groups will discuss their finding s with their group (INTASC # 6). Through having each reading group discuss their findings and collecting the projects (example: character map) that they produce (Tech Comp 12.5).  During this unit plan it will be the Investigator’s job to do research on a topic that took place during the time period of their book.  Before completing their research, each student will have to conference with the teacher about computer ethics, so that they begin to understand copyright laws and security.  Before using the Internet the student’s will get a permission slip signed by parents giving them permission to access the Internet.  They will then notify the teacher of what they are looking up and at the completion of their research they will have to write down the website addresses that they have looked on and gathered information from (Tech Comp 14.1).
