Artifact 3:  Media Video

Context:
During my senior year at ASU I completed a project that focused on the influence of media on a child.  This project contained videotaping of the students.  The grade level that I choose to focus on was the third grade class at Mabel Elementary School.  Before I could videotape the children I had to get permission from his/her parents.  I typed up a specific permission slip telling the parents what my intent was and sent it home so I could get a release to do this project with the students.

Impact:
By using the permission slip I am communicating to the parents about what is happening in the classroom.  As a teacher I know that I will need to let parents know what is going on in the classroom.  I also know that the permission of the parents is very important in doing some projects where their child would be filmed and studied.  The permission slip is a legal document that will help the teachers determine whether or not they are able to do a specific activity.

Alignment:
The permission slip that I used communicated to the parents about what project was going to take place.  You and your colleagues can use this video to learn about what your student's value.  By knowing where your students are coming from, you can use that information to relate their learning experiences in school to something outside of school. (INTASC #10).  This permission slip also ensured my safety and the child’s safety of being video taped. (Tech Comp 14.1) This artifact is a permission slip that lets the parents know what is going on in their child’s classroom.  By communicating with the parents through this permission slip, I am letting them know specifically what my intensions of this project are.  The student video project allows one to focus on the influence of media in the individual students life and therefore collect information on a particular student.  While doing this lesson you might discover that a student’s role model or hero is a musician.  If you find that this student can learn music lyrics easily, you may want to think about having more auditory discussions or even taping lessons and discussions so that the student can use them in your class and outside of your class.  It may be that the child is an auditory learner (Tech Comp 12.2).  This video could be used in the classroom to develop group discussions about what makes a good role model or hero.  Once the students’ have completed their group discussion about what makes a good role model or hero, they will write a brief letter to their parents about their role model and why they chose that person.  This will give parents an insight to what their children are thinking about (Tech Comp 12.3).  As a part of this video project, short video clippings of musicians and wrestlers were used as examples to represent some of the student’s role models/heroes (Tech Comp 12.6).
