Artifact 5: Media Ethnography

Context:
This web page was constructed as a part of my CI 3750 (Integrating Technology and Media into Teaching) class in the fall of 2001 at Appalachian State University.  I was assigned a group according to the school in which I did my internship, Mabel Elementary School.  Our assignment was to find out how media influences students and do a presentation on our results.  We used digital cameras to take pictures, the internet to find research, and took interviews of students in our classes.  After our research, we all worked together to put our findings in the form of a web page using Netscape Composer.  Our project was divided into three main groups:  Student possessions, things around the school, and student attitudes.  We also had a section dedicated to the September 11, 2001 plane crash into the World Trade Center and Pentagon.  We observed how teachers dealt with that situation and listened to the attitudes and questions of students to see how much they were influenced by media.  My group was in charge of things found around the school as well as the September 11 crisis.

Impact:
This web page is available to teachers, students, parents, and the public.  It shows amazing results about how much media actually influences our kids.  After researching this topic, I became more aware as a person, how much media influences me, and as a teacher, how much it influences my students.  By noticing the things that those students hold in high regard, I can better understand how to get on their level and comprehend from where some of their ideas come.

Alignment:
This artifact aligns with technology standard IVB.  We used technology to research and collect data.  Then we analyzed it and attached it to a web page.  This page is accessible to everyone with internet access, therefore it is a form of communication between myself and others.  It helps me to see what is important to my students, which allows me to get on their level to maximize student learning.  Also in alignment with this artifact is INTASC 8.  Teachers can use formal assessment (the web page production) and informal assessment (group participation and time usage) to evaluate a student's performance as well as help foster his or her intellectual, social, and physical development.
