Artifact 9: Literature Database (Example)

Context:
As part of my Language Arts methods class in Fall 2001 at Appalachian State University, I added entries to a literature database.  I read over twenty adolescent books, varying in genre, and provided a response about each book.   I included summaries, instructional ideas and book ratings.  The original database was already constructed by professors, therefore I just added in my entries.

Impact:
As a teacher, I will need to evaluate all the literature in my classroom before my students are exposed to the books.  This database helps me evaluate books that I am unsure of for any number of reasons.  I can search through and find several entries on one book and read them to find out what others think.  This also helps if I need instructional ideas to use for class with a particular book.  I can use my colleagues as a resource to help with the literature in my classroom.

Alignment:
With the help of my friends and colleagues, I can save time by looking at their reviews of books and helping me decide on lessons that can follow those books.  Then I will be able to spend my time more productively by inventing new and exciting ways to introduce these great books into my classroom and get my students excited about reading.  This aligns perfectly with standard VC of the technology standards.
