Artifact 12:  Video Project

Context:

During my Block experience during my senior year at ASU, our entire class collaborated to produce a video project based on the book Ella Enchanted.  The video was created by using the software entitled I-Movie in the Appalachian Media Lab located in Edwin Duncan Hall.  The video was used to help evaluate the students' proficiency while using a digital video camera.

Impact:

This is a great project for a couple of reasons.  First, it is a great idea to use for your own classroom.  Students love to make videos of themselves and each other.  It is also a great way to get them interested and motivated to read good literature.

Alignment:

By creating a classroom video for a certain book that the whole class has read, one can be sure to have diverse ideas from the students.  Variety is important to encourage and embrace in one's classroom and when creating a video, students are going to have the opportunity to be creative and include a variety of ideas in the production  (Tech. Comp. VI. B).  The project requires students to use non-verbal, verbal, and media communication in order to learn (INTASC Standard 6).  A video project is also using a resource that is technical novelty in the schools of today.  By creating this video, the teacher demonstrates his or her desire to find and use the newest and most innovative technology available (Tech. Comp. VI. C.).  By using a video as a means of assessment, I am demonstrating that I understand that children develop differently and at different times.  A video project is such a broad topic that it allows children the chance to use their different skills at different points in their life (INTASC Standard 2).
