Artifact 6:  Ethnography

Context:

The Ethnography was created using the web page editing program Netscape Composer and the word processing program Microsoft Word.  Digital Cameras were used to capture the photographs as well as regular cameras.  Pictures were sometimes scanned into the computer and then manipulated using the software entitled Adobe Photoshop.  A group of 6 people were working together at a specific Elementary school to create the project.

Impact:

It is important that teachers understand about the world around them.  As a professional educator, students are looking up to and critiquing all that one says.  Therefore, it is necessary to become familiar with different tactics that the media uses to manipulate its audience.  One way to do this is to become media literate so that one can better inform his or her students about the impact that media has on the students’ lives.

Alignment:

The Ethnography project deals with collecting information about students’ use and exploitation of the media.  Students are often unaware of the effects that the media has on their own lives.  After collecting and analyzing the information, we created a web page that presented the group's thoughts and conclusions about the effect of the media on students’ lives.  We then presented the web page and our findings to the rest of our class  (Tech. Comp. IV.B).  This project helps students recognize the positive and negative uses of media and technology (Tech Comp. VI.D).  It puts students in the position to evaluate themselves and come up with their own conclusions as to how the world around them is affecting their everyday lives.  By simply collecting and presenting the information, students are becoming more aware.
